Africa Check is an NGO founded by the AFP Foundation to promote accuracy in public debate and the media. Last year, the organization launched the African Fact-Checking Awards, which reward articles and broadcasts that best expose misleading or inaccurate claims from public figures or institutions.
Journalists from around the world can submit original pieces of fact-checking journalism. The pieces must have been first published or broadcast by an Africa-based media house between September 1, 2014 and August 31, 2015.
Competition entries will be judged on the following four criteria:
- the significance of the investigated claim for wider society
- how the claim was tested against the available evidence
- how well the piece presented the evidence for and against the claim
- the impact that the publication had on the public debate
A winner and two runners-up will be selected and announced at an event in Africa in November. The winner will receive a cash prize of 2,000 euros, and the two runners-up a prize of 1,000 euros each.
The deadline for applications is August 31, 2015.
