With financial support from the Waterloo Global Science Initiative, Discourse Media is inviting applications from journalists for the Access to Energy Journalism Fellowship.
According to Discourse Media, over a billion people lack access to modern energy services, from electricity to power their communities’ X-ray machines to clean-burning cookstoves to prepare their family meals. An estimated two billion lack reliable access to these services. This energy poverty has significant impacts on health, access to basic services, and economic opportunities.
The Access to Energy Journalism Fellowship seeks to support journalism on energy access that will have an impact on public discourse. It aims to highlight the topic locally in the reporter’s country or region, and paint a broader, global picture by bringing stories on energy access from many different parts of the world together on one platform.
Discourse Media will present up to eight journalists with funded fellowships to produce two versions of a written feature article on energy access in their country or region. One version will be in English, targeted at a global audience; the other can be written in the writer’s local language, and targeted at their local readership. The total funding available for all fellows is CDN$14,000 [US$10,558].
Staff reporters and freelancers are eligible for the fellowship, and both must have a written agreement from an editor of a publication to publish the content they produce.
The final project will be presented at the 2016 Open Access Energy Summit in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, hosted by the Waterloo Global Science Initiative.
The deadline for receiving applications is November 29, 2015.
