Africa Check is accepting applications for the African Fact-checking Awards. Since 2014, Africa Check has hosted this award to honour journalism that tackles misinformation and influences public policy. In 2018, Africa Check received more than 150 entries from more than 20 countries.

“The increased interest every year in fact-checking can only help strengthen the quality of public debate, and hopefully, improve the quality of life across the continent. We look forward to even more entries every year,” says Noko Makgato, the deputy director of Africa Check.

Winners and runners-up will be acknowledged in two categories: Fact-check of the year by a working journalist and Fact-check of the year by a student.

Entries must have been published or broadcast between Sept. 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019. They should expose a misleading or wrong claim on an important topic made by a public figure or institution in Africa.

The prizes for working journalists are $2,000 US for the winner and $1,000 for the runner-up. The prizes for students are $1,000 for the winner and $500 for the runner-up.

The deadline to apply is June 30.
