Zimbabwe: Migrants flee violence in South Africa

More than 2,000 Zimbabweans displaced by recent attacks on foreigners in South Africa have packed their bags for home, despite that fact that Zimbabwe is on the verge of economic collapse.

The attacks on foreigners started in Durban after recent comments by Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini. He said African migrants in South Africa were criminals, stealing jobs and opportunities from locals.

Several countries have tried to evacuate their citizens. But Zimbabwe is faced with the biggest challenge. One and a half million Zimbabweans are thought to have emigrated to South Africa.

Ngoni Masoka is Zimbabwe’s Labour and Social Welfare Secretary. He says: “There could be Zimbabweans who might have decided not to approach us for help for various reasons, so it is difficult to know how many are coming back exactly.”
