West Africa: Region vulnerable to new major Ebola outbreak as vigilance fades

Health experts say three West African nations could struggle to prevent another major Ebola outbreak as vigilance fades among health workers and the public.

In recent flare-ups, health workers who inspected Ebola victims in Liberia and Sierra Leone were discovered not to be wearing protective clothing.

Armand Sprecher is a public health specialist at Médecins Sans Frontières. He says, “It wasn’t long ago that Ebola was a real and present danger, yet many people have reverted to traditional practices.”

More than 28,600 people have been infected with Ebola and 11,300 have died—mostly in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone—since the epidemic began in December 2013.
