United Nations: Improve women’s lives to boost development in the Sahel

According to the UN Special Envoy to the Sahel, improving women’s access to education, health care and jobs could play an important part in rolling back poverty in the region.

Hiroute Guebre Sellassie stated that the obstacles to development include low levels of education and little participation in the formal economy.

Mrs. Sellassie says, “Without a fundamental restructuring of the role of women, the Sahel risks delaying its legitimate aspirations … in terms of development.”
