Farmers in Uganda can now receive information on crop production and post-harvest losses on their phones. An initiative called “161 service” is delivering information through the mobile phone service provider Airtel Uganda, in partnership with the NGOs Human Network International and Self-Help Africa.

Farmers can dial 161 to listen to a pre-recorded voice message with agricultural information. Messages are recorded in several languages, including Ateso, Lugbara, Luo, Runyakitara, and Luganda. Each month, farmers are provided with 10 free calls so that they can access these messages.
