Ugandan activist Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera has won the Right Livelihood Award. The awards, founded in 1980 and often referred to as “Alternative Nobel Prizes,” are presented annually in the Swedish parliament.
The 35-year-old has used legal avenues to successfully advocate for the rights of the Ugandan Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender, or LGBT, community. Ms. Nabagesera has been beaten, threatened, and arrested for her LGBT advocacy work.
She says: “Even if, at home, my work is regarded as immoral and criminal, at least there are other people out there who appreciate the efforts. Activists say harassment of sexual and gender minorities is increasing in Uganda, where homosexuality is illegal, driven by politicians, religious leaders, and the media.”
