In Senegal, three fish hatcheries are doubling the weight of six-month-old tilapia by reversing the sex of young fingerlings.
Abudala Napuru is an aquaculture expert. He says a chemical hormone called methyl testosterone is mixed with the feed of young fingerlings. The hormone turns females into males.
The ponds cannot become overpopulated because breeding is prevented. This decreases competition for food and increases the weight of individual fish.
