Nigeria: Poultry growers unhappy with government response to bird flu

The Poultry Association of Nigeria, or PAN, has expressed anger at the federal government’s response to an outbreak of avian influenza that has spread across 24 states.

According to a recent report, 2.7 million birds have been affected since the outbreak in 2015. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development says that an estimated 2.5 million birds have been euthanized and buried.

Onallo Akpa is the Director General of PAN. He is calling on the government to properly compensate farmers who have lost animals. He says that, other than measures to destroy chickens in some areas, there are no deliberate plans by the Federal Government to contain the disease.
