Nigeria: Government to introduce soil test kits for farmers (The Guardian)

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Nigeria has announced plans to provide farmers with soil test kits in an effort to boost food production. The technology is known as “Soil Doctor” and enables farmers to conduct instant tests of their soil.

Victor Chude is the director of farm input support services with the Ministry of Agriculture. He says the soil tests will guide farmers on the best fertilizers to apply. He notes that many farmers waste fertilizer by applying it to their whole field.

Currently, 65 extension agents are being trained in this new technology. In turn, they will train farmers.
