Nigeria: Civil society group mediates conflict between herders and farmers

Amidst continued tensions between farmers and herders over access to water points in Nigeria’s Benue State, a civil society group has stepped in to mediate the conflict.

Ghali Umar is a mediator with Pastorale Resolve. Mr. Umar says his approach is always the same: he starts by asking what advice or solutions one group can offer the other. He says the groups must first understand the root of the problem.

Violence between the two groups increased this year because of drought and desertification. In some areas, raids by Fulani herdsmen destroyed villages, killed hundreds of people, and forced tens of thousands to flee. Hundreds of people are killed every year in violent clashes over land use between the semi-nomadic, cattle-herding Fulani people and more settled farming communities.
