Nigeria: Boko Haram is losing, but so is food production

While the Nigerian government is succeeding in its war again Boko Haram, according to the Famine Early Warning Network, or FEWS, food production will be slow to recover in northeast Nigeria—and in neighbouring Cameroon.

FEWS says that farmers have abandoned their land because of the conflict. Roads and markets have also closed, resulting in higher food prices.

FEWS is predicting a food crisis in poor households in parts of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states between February and September of this year.

The World Food Programme estimates that 1.4 million people are food insecure just across the border in Cameroon’s Far North Region. The Boko Haram conflict has worsened existing farming challenges in the area.

In addition, the crucial commodity trade with Nigeria has slowed due to limitations on cross-border movement. Farmers in Cameroon have reduced the size of their plots to cut their risk.
