Niger: Food aid resumes for refugees after Boko Haram scare

Refugees on the border between Niger and Nigeria are again receiving food aid, according to the World Food Programme, or WFP. Humanitarian groups had suspended deliveries for fear of attacks by Boko Haram.

Niger was facing a hunger crisis even before the latest influx of Nigerian refugees. According to a recent assessment, nearly one quarter of the country’s population is acutely malnourished.

WFP official Adel Sarkozi says: “In the [refugee] camps, there is a lack of access to basic services, a lack of food and clean water. We are very concerned about the status of the newly arrived women and children.”
