Mali’s health minister, Ousmane Koné, has declared the country free of Ebola, following a 42-day period without a new case.

According to the World Health Organization, the disease has killed more than 8,400 people in neighbouring Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Mali has recorded six deaths from Ebola, the first of which was confirmed in October 2014. At one point, Malian health officials were monitoring more than 300 contact cases.

Mr. Koné stated: “I declare on this day, January 18, 2015, the end of the Ebola epidemic in Mali.” In his statement, he thanked the country’s health workers and international partners for their work to halt the outbreak.
