Malawi’s president Peter Mutharika has ordered an investigation into reports that multinational companies are grabbing land from small-scale farmers.

Mr. Mutharika ordered the investigation after reports issued by land rights organizations indicated that Malawi had entered into an agreement to release 200,000 hectares of large-scale commercial agriculture land by 2015.

The organizations add that 11 per cent of the country’s population has no access to land for subsistence farming.

Two land bills which were due to be tabled in Malawi’s parliament have been pushed to the next sitting.
