Liberia: Male Ebola survivors asked to abstain from sex

Liberian health authorities are warning male survivors of Ebola to abstain from sex for at least three months after being discharged from treatment centres.

The World Health Organization says there are no documented cases of sexual transmission of the disease, but studies show that the Ebola virus can live in the semen of recovering men for at least 82 days after the first onset of symptoms.

The message is being broadcast on the radio. One announcement says, “When you survive from Ebola, you need to wait until after three months before you have sex. If you don’t wait, you will infect your wife and she will get Ebola.”

The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is spreading similar messages nationwide via TV spots, billboards and word of mouth.
