Kenya: UN not happy with plan to shut Dadaab refugee camp

The United Nations says it will not back down from efforts to persuade Kenya to keep the Dadaab refugee camp open.

But Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto insists that the government’s decision is final. The Kenyan government has cited security threats as the reason for closing the camp, which has been open for more than 20 years.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says the closure will have devastating consequences, as hundreds of thousands of people lose refugee status.

Mr. Ruto has asked other countries to open their borders so that the 300,000 Somalis can be resettled, rather than returning to Somalia.
