Kenyan NGOs have reacted angrily to the announcement that 959 local organizations will be deregistered for failing to properly account for their funding.

Fazul Mohamed Yusuf is CEO of the state regulatory body, the NGO Coordination Board. He says the list of organizations has been forwarded to Kenyan banks and government departments in charge of money laundering for “further investigation and possible prosecution.”

Some of the NGOs named reject the government’s allegations, and accuse the Board of making unfounded and politically-motivated accusations.

Muthoni Wanyeki is Amnesty International’s Regional Director for East Africa, the Horn of Africa, and the Great Lakes Region. He says, “Some on the list may be NGOs that are either not functional or non-compliant. But for some others, it’s a clear case of harassment.”
