More than 600,000 Ethiopians have fled their homes since March, largely due to flooding, according to the United Nations. Rain is expected to continue to fall over the next three months.

A statement by the UN says, “If the La Niña event begins in late August, this may entail heavier than normal rainfall in the El Niño-affected highland areas [of Ethiopia], which may result in intensified flooding.”

The flooding follows one of the worst droughts in decades, which left 10 million Ethiopians in need of emergency aid.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that almost 300,000 Ethiopians have been displaced due to floods, while others have been displaced by inter-communal conflict.
