Ethiopia is planning to increase its exports of electricity to neighbouring nations. The initiative is part of a regional effort to meet energy demands while limiting increases in greenhouse gas emissions.
Ethiopia already exports power to parts of Kenya, Sudan and Djibouti. But new deals promise to send power to Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan and Yemen.
The new $1.8 billion U.S. Gilgel Gibe III dam on the Omo River is set to begin power production as early as June, 2015.
Mekuria Lemma is head of strategy and investment at the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation. He says the regional effort aims to boost economic growth in power-importing nations, increase Ethiopia’s export earnings, and bring grid electricity to millions.
