Last week, 20 of the 30 presidential candidates in the Central African Republic (CAR) called on authorities to stop counting votes. The candidates said the electoral process was marred by fraud, and that the population would question the results.

Voters in the CAR cast ballots on December 30 in what was considered a largely peaceful election.

Last Monday, after nearly 40 per cent of the ballots had been counted, former Prime Minister Faustin Archange Touadera was in the lead.

Under the country’s electoral system, the top two presidential hopefuls go head-to-head in a run-off election. The run-off is currently scheduled for January 31.
