As presidential and legislative elections went ahead last week, peacekeepers patrolled the streets of Central African Republic. Many voters hope the elections will end years of violence in which thousands have died.
The elections had proceeded without violence as polls began to close. Authorities repeatedly delayed the elections, and some doubt the militia groups at the heart of the country’s conflict will accept the results.
There were thirty candidates in the presidential election, and all the National Assembly’s seats were contested. The elections are considered a major milestone in the country’s transition to democracy.
