Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza missed a meeting of East African leaders in Dar es Salaam on the crisis in his country. His absence may be linked to a rebel general pledging to pressure the government until it is overthrown.

Burundian rebel general Leonard Ngendakumana led the failed coup to topple President Nkurunziza last May. He says he will launch further attacks until the government is overthrown.

General Ngendakumana says: “After we saw that we could not succeed our coup on May 15, we found it was necessary to keep fighting so that we can push Nkurunziza to keep thinking about what he is doing and maybe just resign.”
