Burundi: Burundi crisis a ‘catastrophic’ risk for region

The African Union is warning that the crisis in Burundi risks spiralling into a catastrophe for the country and the wider region.

Last week, unidentified gunmen killed former chief of staff Colonel Jean Bikomagu outside his home in Bujumbura. Colonel Bikomagu was the second high-profile official assassinated this month.

AU Commission chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma condemned the killing. In her statement, she said: “This ignoble act and many other violent acts in Burundi these last few months illustrate the gravity of the situation and the real risk of further deterioration, with catastrophic consequences for the country and the whole region.”
