“A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women.”
To mark this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD), we at Farm Radio Weekly have chosen to step outside our usual farm-based stories. This week’s three stories are all linked to the inalienable right of a woman to choose for herself: we explore circumcision and marriage.
From Kenya comes the heartening news that female genital mutilation is becoming less common, and more socially unacceptable. The practice was outlawed in 2010 and now many fathers, backed by all-male councils of elders, are protecting their daughters from the cut.
Women in Uganda are standing up to social pressure, and choosing to marry later in life. Although many men are looking for women to cook, raise children and look after the home, an increasing number of women are choosing education and career over domestic roles.
There are more women in the world than men: stand up for their rights!
