Hello to all!

We welcome all our readers to a special issue of FRW that examines the value of local, traditional crops. A special welcome is extended to our newest subscriber, from the NGO Groupe de Recherche des Initiatives pour la Protection de l’Environnement in Benin.

Our first story comes from Uganda, where economics are driving flower farmers to experiment with local varieties. These farmers hope to reduce their dependence on the lagging export market. Continuing with this theme of local crops, we bring you two news stories that have appeared in earlier editions of FRW. A story from East Africa (previously published in May 2008) looks at the resurgence of traditional vegetables as a reliable source of family nutrition. Another story (first published in December 2007), looks at how traditional crops are being used across the continent in an effort to maintain food security in the face of climate change. A final item on traditional crops can be found in the Script of the Week.

Our Upcoming Events and Radio Resource Bank entries will be of interest to all African journalists, as they describe a new competition and training opportunity. Turn to the Farm Radio Action section for a reminder about the 2009 FRW Survey, and information on how you can be entered into two draws for Sansa MP3 players!

Happy reading!
