    Warm greetings to all!

We extend a special welcome to new subscribers: Paul Cesar Mbale Mame, from the organization Edea in Cameroon; Samuel Danquah from the Peace Corps in Ghana; Elizabeth Anche, from Kaduna State Radio in Nigeria; and Judie Lembela, from National Agricultural Information Services in Zambia. We hope you enjoy our newsletter! We invite all of our readers to provide feedback at any time by posting a comment on the FRW website, or by sending an e-mail to farmradioweekly@farmradio.org.

This week, we turn our focus to those who breed and rear livestock. Our first story visits the Tigray region of Ethiopia, an area of semi-arid highlands where farmers face many challenges raising livestock. We learn how locals have boosted their income and improved local food security by trying a new breed of cattle and working together in dairy cooperatives. Our second story offers a new perspective on pastoralism and its value in East Africa, higlighting a report on the theme by the International Institute for Environment and Development.

We then turn to West Africa, where several countries are coping with recent floods. In these difficult situations, people may feel powerless. Our Farm Radio Resource and Script of the Week sections look at ways that local radio stations and local groups can help communities to prepare for and cope with emergencies.

Finally, scroll down to the Farm Radio Action section to read about our new scriptwriting competition. This competition invites you to visit farmers, learn about the innovative approaches they take to their work, and share them through an original script. There is an opportunity for all competitors to receive free training – and a chance to win great prizes!

    Happy reading!
