Tumaini Anathory is a presenter, assistant editor, and producer at Radio Karagwe FM in Kagera Region, Tanzania. A broadcaster since 2011, Mr. Anathory’s current role at Radio Karagwe FM includes finding program sponsors and ensuring that program content meets the station’s editorial policies.

Mr. Anathory has also worked with BBC Media Action since 2015, and with United Nations Radio as a reporter and writer on community issues.

At Radio Karagwe FM, Mr. Anathory presents a program called Kilimo Chetu, or “Our Agriculture.” The show is a forum for small-scale farmers and agricultural experts to discuss how to increase      productivity and income. Recently, the program aired recommended practices for bean, maize, and cassava production from land preparation to market. The program also discusses farmers’ business practices, including how to manage income so they can      buy inputs at the appropriate time.

Farmers face a variety of challenges in the Kagera Region     , including pest and disease problems, a shortage of extension agents, violence against women during the harvest season, poor access to agricultural inputs, and gaining access to markets. To address these issues, Mr. Anathory’s program brings together farmers and extension experts on–air to identify solutions.

To feature farmers’ voices, Mr. Anathory visits farmers in the field or at home, recording interviews, and forwarding their questions to agricultural experts who answer them on-air.

Mr. Anathory received face-to-face training from FRI in Tanzania and Uganda, and interacts with FRI’s programming staff to discuss program design. He makes regular use of the VOICE standards when creating programs, and participated in FRI’s farmer program e-course in 2020.

Tumaini Anathory was one of five runners-up for the 2021 George Atkins Communications Award. The George Atkins Communications Award recognizes radio broadcasters for their excellence in serving their rural audience and commitment to Farm Radio International.
