This week’s Farmer story from Kenya highlights seven young friends who started a joint mushroom business. Our Script of the week shows that young people have been turning a profit by growing and selling mushrooms for a while—at least since 2003, when this script was published.

The script notes that radio programs can encourage farmers to explore new business ideas. Broadcasters can air interviews or stories about local farmers who are growing new crops, raising new types of livestock, keeping bees, cultivating medicinal plants, or adding value to farm produce through food processing.

This week’s script was adapted from a radio interview broadcast by Farm Radio International partner, Classic FM Radio, in Ghana. During the interview, the young guest discusses his successful experience with growing mushrooms. He notes that mushroom growing is a good example of a less capital-intensive agricultural practice that provides extra income.

You could adapt this script to better suit the needs of your listeners or use it as is. Alternatively, you could use it as a model for your own interviews with local farmers.
